Software Engineer

Job Type: Contractor
Location: Remote
Schedule: Flexible, approximately 15 hours per week
Compensation: $30–$100/hour equivalent, output-based

About the Role

We’re looking for experienced software engineers to contribute to the development and evaluation of next-generation AI systems.

You’ll use your software engineering expertise to create realistic, challenging coding tasks for AI systems and develop deterministic verifiers that can distinguish valid solutions from incorrect ones.

No prior AI experience is required. Your software engineering expertise and ability to reason about real-world code are what matter.

What You’ll Do

  • Create realistic and challenging coding tasks for AI systems.

  • Design tasks involving feature implementation and bug fixing.

  • Develop deterministic verifiers that accept reasonable valid solutions and reject invalid ones.

  • Debug software and diagnose implementation issues.

  • Work on performance optimisation and system bottlenecks.

  • Implement complex features in existing codebases.

  • Refactor code while maintaining correctness and reliability.

  • Apply strong testing practices to validate solutions.

  • Use sound code review and technical judgment to evaluate implementations.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong backend software development experience using one or more of:

    • Java

    • Node.js

    • Go

    • Rust

    • TypeScript

    • Python

    • C++

    • Similar backend technologies

  • Experience building scalable services and APIs.

  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.

  • Experience with performance optimisation.

  • Experience with automated testing.

  • Strong code review instincts.

  • Solid understanding of algorithms, data structures, and foundational computer science concepts.

  • Ability to implement features and resolve bugs in existing codebases.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong technical communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record delivering high-quality, performant software projects.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving software bugs and system bottlenecks.

  • Experience refactoring codebases and implementing complex features in large-scale applications.

  • Strong testing background, including one or more of:

    • Designing testing strategies

    • Building and maintaining large test suites

    • Diagnosing flaky tests

    • Improving testing standards within a development team

Work Arrangement

  • Remote contractor position.

  • Approximately 15 hours per week.

  • Flexible schedule—you choose your working hours and days, including weekends if preferred.

  • No prior AI experience is required.

Compensation

Annualized Equivalent: $62,400–$208,000/year based on 40 hours/week
Hourly Rate: $30–$100/hour

Compensation is output-based, with experts paid per task that meets the applicable project specifications. The time required to complete a task may vary depending on experience and workflow. Minimum submission requirements apply, including a minimum number of tasks per week.

The annualized figure is an hourly-equivalent reference. Actual compensation is based on qualifying task output.

Selection Process

  1. Submit an application and complete the screening questions.

  2. Complete an AI interview of approximately 30 minutes.

  3. Complete a technical assessment, if applicable.

  4. Participate in hiring manager review.

The interview and assessment process is designed to evaluate your independent technical reasoning. Candidates are expected to complete these stages without outside assistance. The same principle applies during project work, where the value of the contribution depends on your own technical judgment.

Start Timeline

Selected candidates should be prepared to begin quickly. The typical hiring timeline is approximately 48 hours, with an expectation to begin initial tasks within 24–48 hours after completing onboarding.
